In a vote that ran almost cleanly along party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on Jan.24 to permanently prohibit federal funds from paying for abortion services. The bill, now scheduled for a vote in the U.S. Senate, has gotten support for President Donald Trump.
“That’s what we should be all about. Life affirming and the saving of human life,” said Rep. Chris Smith, a Republican from New Jersey who penned the anti-abortion legislation, reports The Hill.
As the bill cleared the House, the pro-abortion rights Guttmacher Institute took to Twitter to announce the news.
“BREAKING: US House just passed HR7, which would prevent millions of women from using their health insurance to pay for #abortion care.”
“It’s particularly shameful that politicians in Congress are voting to restrict a woman’s ability to get basic health care services just three days after millions of women, men, and families mobilized and marched for their rights,” Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, wrote in a statement after the House’s vote, notes Cosmopolitan.
But Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan countered the claim by referencing the anti-abortion March of Life rally scheduled for Jan. 27.
According to The Hill, Speaker Ryan wrote in a statement, “As hundreds of thousands of Americans flock to Washington for the March for Life, we must never forget that defending all of our people — especially the defenseless — must be our top priority if we want to be a good and moral nation.”
“This is all part of the Trump-Pence agenda to punish women,” Destiny Lopez, co-director of the abortion rights organization All* Above All, told Refinery29.
“Black women in our country are already suffering the harms of bans on abortion coverage, and rather than improving our access to necessary health services, the new Congress is obsessed with restricting abortion and doubling down on the Hyde Amendment,” Kierra Johnson, executive director of Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity, added. “Americans are more supportive than ever of keeping abortion legal, available, and covered by insurance. Shame on these out-of-touch politicians.”
