This Waitress Receives Racist Note Instead Of A Tip

A Virginia waitress was shocked to find that instead of a tip, a couple left her a racist message on their check.

racial discriminationOn Jan. 7, waitress Kelly Carter was serving a white couple at a local New Mexico-style restaurant, according to the Daily Mail. At first, the interaction seemed completely normal. The diners didn’t appear hostile toward Carter and appeared to enjoy the food and service. However, after they left, the waitress was shocked to read what they wrote on the check.

In lieu of a tip, the couple simply wrote “great service [but] don’t tip black people.”

Restaurant owner Tom Tellez called Carter one of his top employees and said the incident “disheartening” and “outrageous.”

The Loudoun County branch of the NAACP posted a picture of the receipt on Twitter, adding: “Hatred will not be tolerated and we will not keep quiet.”

The story garnered a mixed reaction from the Twitter community, with some expressing outrage on Carter’s behalf and others accusing the waitress of writing the message herself:

The Daily Mail reports that a GoFundMe page has been set up on Carter’s behalf. As of Jan. 9, it has $430 of its $2,000 goal.

Carter maintains that if the customers were to come back to the restaurant, she would still serve them.

“My arms are still open,” she told WRC. “One hateful remark cannot stop me. You have to forgive and forget and move on.”
