Trump Fires Back At Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes Speech By Calling Her ‘Overrated’

President-elect Donald Trump has fired back at Meryl Streep, calling the actress “overrated.”

trump vs meryl streepThe Daily Mail reports that Trump has responded to Streep’s Golden Globe speech where the actress slammed the president-elect. Although she never mentioned Trump’s name during her Cecile B. DeMille lifetime achievement award acceptance speech, Streep did call into question Trump’s actions during the campaign.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me — it sank its hooks in my heart,” Streep said. “Not because it was good; there was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”

Streep was referring to the time on the campaign trail when Trump allegedly mocked a disabled reporter from The New York Times by curling his arms up to his chest and imitating the man, who has a severe disability that forces him to curl his arms in just such a way. Trump has denied mocking the reporter, claiming instead that he was calling the man out for changing one of the stories he wrote in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

“I was never mocking anyone,” Trump said. “I was calling into question a reporter who had gotten nervous because he had changed his story. People keep saying I intended to mock the reporter’s disability, as if Meryl Streep and others could read my mind, and I did no such thing,” Trump said. “And remember, Meryl Streep introduced [Democratic presidential nominee] Hillary Clinton at her convention, and a lot of these people supported Hillary,” Trump added, referring to Streep’s speech at the Democratic National Convention last summer on behalf of his opponent.

Trump continued his barrage on Twitter, firing back at Streep by calling her “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood,” and “a Hillary flunky who lost big.”

According to The New York Times, Streep’s comments drew some applause at the Golden Globes, but have also drawn harsh criticism from Republicans, including those who are against Trump, like Meghan McCain, who believes that any time Hollywood liberals speak out against Trump it hurts their own cause by emboldening his supporters.

Streep criticized Trump for being a bully and using the bully pulpit to spur others to do the same. “This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”

Trump, meanwhile, is setting his sights on the inauguration. “We are going to have an unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration, and there will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars,” Trump said. “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.”
